I am currently providing private instruction for beginning students. At present, I have four private beginning students and I am the head instructor for ten new pipers who have formed a new pipe band, the Salem Firefighters Pipes and Drums.
I do have openings for a few more students. The instruction fee is $15 for a private 30 minute lesson. I expect a level of committment from my students. I expect them to practice every day, at least 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night. As the student advances, I expect that practice time to increase. Along with the increase in practice time, the student will gain stamina and build muscle that will enable a smooth transition to the bagpipe. I expect the student to be punctual for the lesson and to be prepared by practicing the assignments passed out during the lesson. The time involved in learning how to play the bagpipe, first on the practice chanter and then transitioning to the bagpipe is highly individual and completely dependent upon the student paying attention to the instruction and regularly practicing. The time can range from 6 months to a year before a student is ready to make the jump from practice chanter to the bagpipe, again, depending upon the amount of time spent practicing their lessons.
